Shulgin Foundation Newsletter Marketing (2024 - Present)
Building Community Through Strategic Content for a Legacy Organization
I developed and executed the comprehensive newsletter marketing strategy for the Shulgin Foundation, the organization preserving the legacy of psychedelic pioneers Sasha and Ann Shulgin, whose work fundamentally shaped the understanding of psychoactive compounds.
Taking on this role required deep sensitivity to the Foundation's unique position: honoring a scientific legacy while engaging a diverse community spanning academic researchers, harm reduction advocates, donors, and psychedelic enthusiasts. I was responsible for every aspect of newsletter creation, from strategic planning and content development to design and audience segmentation.
Key Achievements:
Brand Voice Development: Analyzed the Foundation's existing digital presence and established a cohesive editorial voice that reflected their values: scientific integrity, community, and reverence for the Shulgins' humanistic approach to psychedelic field
Content Strategy: Created a sustainable content framework that balanced educational content, community updates, preservation project milestones, and donation appeals, all tailored to audience segments
Stakeholder Collaboration: Coordinated with Board members, archivists, researchers, and partner organizations to source authentic, compelling content that maintained the Foundation's authoritative voice
Targeted Campaigns: Developed specialized messaging for different audience segments within the psychedelic community, from academic researchers seeking access to the Shulgin archives to donors interested in supporting preservation efforts
Adaptive Branding: Continuously refined the newsletter's tone and visual identity as the Foundation's brand evolved, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints
The newsletter became a vital connective tissue for the Shulgin community, keeping stakeholders informed about archive digitization progress, educational initiatives, and opportunities for engagement, while nurturing the donor relationships essential to the Foundation's sustainability.
Two examples of the newsletter can be found below, but if you’d like to see other newsletters I’ve crafted, go to the Shulgin Foundation website.
MIND Foundation Brochure (2021)
Strategic Communications Leadership for Europe's Leading Psychedelic Research Organization
As a member of MIND Foundation's Executive Board, I spearheaded the development of the organization's flagship brochure, a critical strategic communications tool designed to position MIND as the preeminent voice in psychedelic research, therapy, and human development in Europe.
This 28-page publication served as the primary touchpoint for stakeholders across multiple audiences: potential donors and investors, academic partners, mental health professionals, policymakers, and the broader psychedelic community. The challenge was substantial: distill complex scientific research, ten distinct educational programs, and a sophisticated philosophical framework ("Bewusstseinskultur") into an accessible, compelling narrative that would resonate across diverse audiences while maintaining scientific rigor.
Working closely with MIND's leadership, including Dr. Henrik Jungaberle (Co-Founder) and Dr. Marvin Däumichen (Managing Director), I led the strategic communications approach, focusing on:
Simplifying Complex Science: Translated dense academic concepts into clear, engaging language that honored the scientific foundation while remaining accessible to non-specialist audiences
Articulating Value Propositions: Highlighted MIND's unique positioning at the intersection of rigorous research, professional training, and human development, differentiating the organization in an emerging field
Building Investor Confidence: Structured content to demonstrate organizational maturity, evidence-based methodology, and scalable impact, including the landmark EPIsoDE study (Germany's first psilocybin depression clinical trial)
Establishing Thought Leadership: Showcased MIND's comprehensive ecosystem of programs, from the Augmented Psychotherapy Training (APT) to the MOLECULES curriculum, demonstrating depth and breadth of expertise
The brochure successfully communicated MIND's ambitious vision: creating safe, legal, and accessible frameworks for psychedelic experiences in both clinical and human development contexts. It detailed the organization's ten programs, research initiatives, partnerships with leading European institutions, and commitment to diversity, equity, and access, all while maintaining a tone that balanced scientific authority with humanistic values.
This project required coordinating across multiple departments, balancing diverse stakeholder perspectives, and crafting messaging that would resonate with both scientific and lay audiences. The result was a cornerstone communications asset that supported MIND's fundraising efforts, partnership development, and brand positioning during a critical growth period.
Public Speaking and Thought Leadership at Europe's Premier Psychedelic Conference
At INSIGHT 2021, I represented MIND Foundation in two high-profile speaking roles before an international audience of 1,500 attendees (in-person and livestream), including researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and industry leaders.
Opening Remarks (Executive Board Presentation)
Alongside MIND's Executive Board, I delivered the conference's opening address, introducing the Foundation's mission, programs, and vision for psychedelic integration in European society. This presentation set the tone for the three-day conference, positioning MIND as a convening force bridging rigorous science, clinical practice, and public discourse.
Panel Moderation: "From the Lab to the Retreat Center? Ethical Science Communication and Psychedelic Pop Culture"
I also moderated this panel discussion featuring leading voices in psychedelic research:
Dr. Andrea Jungaberle (MIND Co-Founder, Physician)
Dr. Katrin Preller (University of Zürich, MIND Scientific Advisory Board)
Dr. Anna Ciaunica (University of Porto, Philosopher)
Dr. Keren Tzerfarty (Science Communicator)
The panel addressed one of the field's most pressing challenges: navigating the tension between rigorous scientific methodology and the popularization of psychedelics in mainstream culture. As moderator, I facilitated nuanced discussion on ethical science communication, the risks of overpromising therapeutic benefits, media sensationalism, and the responsibilities of researchers in shaping public understanding.
This required substantial preparation: researching each panelist's work, identifying provocative questions that would generate meaningful dialogue, and managing the live discussion to ensure balanced participation and audience engagement. The result was a thoughtful, critical conversation that resonated strongly with attendees and exemplified MIND's commitment to reflexive, ethics-driven discourse.
INSIGHT Conference Opening & Panel Discussion (2021)
Securing €40,000 in Strategic Partnerships for INSIGHT 2021
I independently developed and executed MIND Foundation's sponsorship strategy for the INSIGHT 2021 conference, securing €40,000 in partnerships with leading organizations across the psychedelic ecosystem. This effort was crucial to the conference's financial sustainability and reinforced MIND's position as the convening authority in European psychedelic research and practice.
Strategic Partnership Portfolio:
I identified, pitched, and negotiated agreements with six innovative organizations, each representing different facets of the emerging psychedelic field:
Wavepaths (Music therapy platform for psychedelic experiences)
Filament Health (Pharmaceutical-grade natural psychedelic drug development)
Nikean (Mental health and psychedelic research organization)
Miraculix (Substance testing and harm reduction technology)
LeafyTunnel (Psychedelic education and community platform)
Vine Ventures (Investment fund focused on psychedelic medicine)
This required developing tailored value propositions for each potential partner, demonstrating how INSIGHT's audience aligned with their strategic goals, and creating sponsorship packages that balanced financial support with meaningful brand visibility and thought leadership opportunities.
The partnerships not only provided essential funding but also enriched the conference experience through partner-led workshops, networking events, and product demonstrations, creating value for attendees while deepening MIND's relationships with key industry players.
This project demonstrated my ability to operate independently in business development, understand complex stakeholder motivations, and translate organizational value into compelling partnership opportunities. See the INSIGHT Conference 2021 report for more details.
